As the UK continues to face evolving threats from transboundary animal diseases, effective border biosecurity has never been more critical. From the movement of horses and companion animals to the importation of livestock and animal products, biosecurity practices at points of entry directly impact national disease resilience.

Every day in small animal veterinary practice we are faced with ethical challenges in our decision making. The decisions we make for animals, in partnership with their owners and carers, can have far-reaching consequences for everyone involved.

This session will give you an opportunity to hear about potential reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act (VSA) directly from those involved in developing a draft proposal.

Parasiticides are vital for keeping pets healthy and preventing serious animal and human health risks, but growing evidence shows that these products are contaminating the environment, with the potential to impact wildlife, ecosystems, and public health.

It is clear that the cause of obesity is a result of eating more than you burn. It is physics. What is more complex to answer is why some people eat more than others? Differences in our genetic make-up mean some of us are slightly more hungry all the time and so eat more than others. I will highlight the fat-sensing 'leptin-melanocortin' pathway, as a key appetite control circuit.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being embedded into farming systems in the UK, and this trend seems likely to continue in the future. This session will explore the role of the farm animal vet in this emerging technology, including the potential opportunities and risks for the profession and for animal health and welfare. It will also consider potential future uses of AI and how that could transform the way farming, and therefore the farm animal profession operates.
