By the end of this presentation, participants/attendees will be able to:
· Define the concept of the links between animal abuse, domestic and inter-familial abuse, child abuse, and wider safeguarding concerns.
· Recognise common clinical, behavioural, and contextual indicators of non-accidental injury (NAI) or suspected abuse in animals.
· Understand how concerns for animal welfare may signal risk to humans, including children, vulnerable adults, or people experiencing domestic abuse.
· Basic understanding of the role of UK social workers (children’s and adults’ services) and understand what happens after a safeguarding referral is made.
· Apply practical guidance for what vets and vet teams should do when concerns arise, including documentation, communication, and referral to police, authorities (local authority/RSPCA) and the NAI helpline.
· Reflect on case examples (limited to one or two due to time constraints) to identify appropriate courses of action.
· Identify their own professional responsibilities, legal duties, and boundaries, including confidentiality, information sharing, and when it is appropriate to break confidentiality.
· Feel more confident initiating safeguarding conversations within practice teams and with external agencies.
